Beyond a measurement of weight

Body weight alone does not describe how the body is composed. DEXA uses measurements from two X-ray energy levels to estimate components including fat and lean tissue.

Lean tissue is not identical to a direct measurement of muscle strength or fitness. Results should be considered in the context of health, nutrition and your reason for having the assessment.

What to expect

You generally lie still on a scanning table while the DEXA arm passes over the body. Clothing, positioning and other factors can affect measurements, so follow the clinic’s guidance.

DEXA uses low-dose X-rays. Tell the clinic if you are pregnant or could be pregnant and discuss whether the assessment is appropriate for you.

A different purpose from bone density

A body composition assessment and a bone density scan use related technology but answer different questions. A body composition scan should not be assumed to replace a bone density assessment for osteoporosis.

The exact report metrics and any repeat-scan arrangements need to be confirmed with the clinic. No specific measurement package, performance outcome or weight-loss result is promised.
