01

Cross-sectional imaging

A CT scanner collects X-ray images from different angles and a computer combines them into cross-sectional views. These images can provide information that differs from a general X-ray.

CT uses ionising radiation. Your treating practitioner considers the benefit of the scan and whether it is appropriate for you. Tell the clinic if you are pregnant or could be pregnant.

02

CT without contrast

A non-contrast CT does not use contrast material. Some clinical questions can be assessed this way. Your practitioner and the imaging team determine the examination needed from the request and relevant clinical information.

Non-contrast CT is not automatically the right choice for every question. Confirm that your requested scan is available.

03

CT with contrast

Contrast material can help make certain structures more visible. For some CT examinations it is given through a vein; other arrangements depend on the examination. Confirm the planned approach with the clinic.

Tell the clinic about previous contrast reactions, kidney problems, pregnancy, medicines and other relevant medical conditions. The imaging team will advise whether extra assessment or preparation is needed. Do not stop medication without individual advice.

Injected contrast can cause temporary sensations such as warmth or a metallic taste. Reactions are possible; discuss concerns with the imaging team before the examination.

04

Inside the scanner

You lie on a table that moves through the scanner’s short, ring-shaped opening. You may be asked to remain still or hold your breath briefly. Preparation and the time spent at the clinic vary by examination.

The clinic uses a GE Revolution Altitude Plus 128-slice low-dose CT scanner. The dose for an individual examination depends on the scan and clinical requirements; no fixed dose or reduction is promised.

Preparation for your scan

Confirm whether contrast is planned and follow the clinic’s instructions for your exact scan. Ask whether blood tests or eating and drinking instructions are needed. Tell the team about previous contrast reactions and kidney conditions before attending.

General information only. Follow the clinic’s instructions for your individual examination.
