01
Looking at soft tissues
Musculoskeletal ultrasound provides images of soft tissues near muscles and joints. Depending on the area and clinical question, it can help assess changes involving tendons, muscles, ligaments or fluid-filled structures.
It is not the same as an X-ray, which is often used to assess bones. Your practitioner chooses the imaging that best suits the question being investigated.
02
Movement can provide information
Gel is applied to the skin and the probe is moved over the requested area. You may be asked to move the joint or change position so that tissues can be assessed during movement.
Let the person performing the scan know which movements are painful. Some gentle pressure may be needed, but you should speak up if you are uncomfortable.
03
An examination, not a treatment
This service provides imaging information to support clinical assessment. It does not imply that injections, procedures or treatment are offered by the practice.
Ultrasound does not show every cause of musculoskeletal pain. Your practitioner may consider other imaging or assessments if the findings do not explain your symptoms.
Preparation for your scan
Wear clothing that allows access to the area if practical, and ask the clinic whether any specific preparation or previous imaging is needed for your requested examination.
General information only. Follow the clinic’s instructions for your individual examination.
