Guided by the clinical question

General ultrasound can provide information about internal structures and soft tissues. The area examined and images obtained depend on the request and the question your practitioner is trying to answer.

During an external scan

The examination commonly involves gel on the skin and a handheld probe moved across the area. You may be asked to change position or briefly hold your breath to help obtain images.

Ultrasound provides real-time images without ionising radiation. Air, depth and other factors can affect what can be seen, so another test may sometimes be more appropriate.

Elastography as a related assessment

Elastography assesses tissue stiffness and can add information in selected ultrasound examinations. It is different from the standard images alone.

Whether elastography is relevant to you depends on the clinical question and available examination. Ask the clinic to confirm the assessment requested.
