Ultrasound assessment of the heart

An echocardiogram produces moving images of the heart. It can help assess the chambers, valves, pumping function and blood flow through the heart.

Your practitioner may request an echo to investigate symptoms, a clinical finding or a known heart condition. The findings are considered alongside your history and other tests.

02

What to expect from an external echo

A standard external echocardiogram commonly involves gel and a probe on the chest while you lie on an examination bed. You may be asked to turn onto your side, and stickers may be used to monitor the heart rhythm.

Confirm the examination planned at the clinic. This description does not imply that specialised echo approaches or stress testing are offered.

03

How it differs from calcium scoring

An echo uses sound waves to assess the heart’s structures and movement. Calcium scoring uses CT to measure calcified plaque in the coronary arteries for selected risk assessments.

These tests answer different questions. Neither is a substitute for the other, and your practitioner will advise what is appropriate.

Preparation for your scan

Cardiac ultrasound is by appointment only. Confirm your appointment and any preparation for the examination planned; ask before making changes to medication.

General information only. Follow the clinic’s instructions for your individual examination.
