Information about bone strength
Bone density testing measures bone mineral density and can help assess osteoporosis and fracture risk. Your practitioner decides whether a scan is appropriate based on your health and risk factors.
Bone density is one part of bone health. The findings are interpreted with your history and other clinical information, rather than treated as a complete measure of fracture risk on their own.
02
What the scan involves
DEXA uses low-dose X-rays. You generally lie on an examination table while the scanning arm moves over the area being assessed. The team may position you carefully and ask you to remain still.
Tell the clinic if you are pregnant or could be pregnant, or have recently had other imaging involving contrast. Confirm which areas will be assessed for your request.
03
Bone density is not body composition
Bone density assessment focuses on bone mineral density. A DEXA body composition examination has a different purpose, looking at the body’s composition.
Although both use DEXA technology, the scans and interpretation are not interchangeable. Confirm which examination your practitioner has requested.
Preparation for your scan
Confirm preparation with the clinic, including advice about any supplements and recent imaging. Do not stop prescribed medication based on general guidance. Ask about clothing or metal items that could affect the scan.
General information only. Follow the clinic’s instructions for your individual examination.
