What the measurement means
Nuchal translucency describes a fluid space at the back of a developing baby’s neck that can be measured by ultrasound during a specific early-pregnancy window. In combined first-trimester screening, this measurement is considered with other information, including blood test results and maternal factors.
A screening result estimates the chance of certain chromosomal conditions. A higher-chance result does not mean a baby definitely has a condition, and a lower-chance result does not rule one out.
02
Choosing a screening pathway
Nuchal translucency, combined first-trimester screening and non-invasive prenatal testing are not interchangeable examinations. Your maternity care provider can discuss the benefits, limitations and choices that suit your pregnancy.
Screening is optional. Further counselling or diagnostic testing may be discussed after a screening result. Confirm what assessment has been requested and what the clinic’s service includes.
03
Timing matters
This measurement is only useful within an appropriate stage of pregnancy. Contact the clinic promptly when your care provider requests the examination so that timing and any associated arrangements can be confirmed.
The scan uses ultrasound, but obtaining the measurement can depend on the baby’s position and the stage of development.
Preparation for your scan
