Imaging through pregnancy
Pregnancy ultrasound may help assess the pregnancy’s development, estimate gestational age, identify the number of babies, and examine fetal anatomy at appropriate stages. What can be seen changes as the pregnancy progresses.
Your maternity care provider will advise which scan is appropriate and when. A scan is one part of antenatal care, not a guarantee that every condition will be identified.
02
Routine imaging and screening are different
A general obstetric examination and a screening assessment do not necessarily answer the same questions. Nuchal translucency and preeclampsia screening have their own purposes and timing considerations.
If screening is requested, confirm the arrangements with the clinic and your maternity care provider rather than assuming it is included in any pregnancy scan.
03
During the examination
Many pregnancy scans involve a probe moving over gel on the abdomen. The approach depends on the stage of pregnancy and information needed. Ask what examination is planned and discuss any concerns before it begins.
The baby’s position and other factors can affect the images obtained. Your treating practitioner can explain the findings and whether follow-up is appropriate.
Preparation for your scan
Confirm the timing and preparation for your specific pregnancy scan. Ask whether any bladder preparation is needed and which previous results or pregnancy information the clinic would like you to bring.
General information only. Follow the clinic’s instructions for your individual examination.

Common questions
Timing depends on the reason for the scan and your stage of pregnancy. Your maternity care provider and the clinic can confirm the appropriate arrangements.
No. Ultrasound has limitations and cannot identify every fetal or pregnancy-related condition.
Do not assume that it is. It is a specific screening assessment; confirm the request and timing with your care provider and clinic.
