01

A familiar imaging examination

X-rays pass through the body and are recorded to produce an image. Different tissues absorb X-rays differently, which allows structures to be seen.

General X-ray can help assess a range of clinical questions, but not every condition is visible on an X-ray. Confirm the specific examination available at this clinic rather than assuming a list of body areas or procedures.

02

Positioning for the images

You may stand, sit or lie down depending on the examination. The imaging team positions the area to be assessed and may ask you to remain still or briefly hold your breath.

More than one view may be needed. Clothing or metal items over the area can affect images; the team will explain what needs to be removed or adjusted. Tell them about pain or limited movement.

03

Safety and the right test

X-ray uses ionising radiation, so the need for imaging is considered against its benefit. Tell your practitioner and imaging team if you are pregnant or could be pregnant before the examination.

Ultrasound, CT and X-ray provide different information. Your practitioner may choose a different test or further assessment if needed.

Preparation for your scan

Ask the clinic about availability, appointment arrangements and preparation for your requested X-ray. No walk-in rule is assumed for X-ray. Tell the team about pregnancy and any difficulty with positioning.

General information only. Follow the clinic’s instructions for your individual examination.
