Understanding tissue stiffness

Elastography looks at how tissue responds to mechanical forces or waves to estimate stiffness. This adds a different kind of information to conventional ultrasound images.

Stiffness measurements can be affected by the tissue being assessed, the method and the circumstances of the examination. A result must be interpreted in its clinical context.

A targeted addition to ultrasound

Elastography may form part of an ultrasound assessment when it is relevant to the clinical question. It does not replace a full clinical assessment or establish a diagnosis on its own.

What to expect

An ultrasound probe is used at the area being examined. Depending on the assessment, you may be asked to remain still or briefly hold your breath while measurements are collected.

Your practitioner can explain how the result relates to other imaging, blood tests or clinical findings.
