Vascular ultrasound can examine blood vessels and use Doppler techniques to assess blood flow. Depending on the requested examination, it may help assess concerns such as narrowing, obstruction or altered flow.

The scan is targeted to a particular clinical question. Confirm which vascular examinations are available at the practice.

Not the same as cardiac ultrasound

Vascular ultrasound focuses on blood vessels in the area requested. Cardiac ultrasound assesses the heart, including its chambers and valves. These examinations are not interchangeable.

Your treating practitioner can advise which test is appropriate for your symptoms and medical history.

What the examination may feel like

Gel is applied and a probe is moved across the skin over the area being assessed. You may hear sounds produced by the Doppler assessment or be asked to change position.

Pressure may be applied during some examinations. Let the person performing the scan know if an area is particularly tender.
