A closer look, using sound
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images inside the body. It does not use ionising radiation. A handheld probe sends and receives sound waves, and the images can be viewed as the scan takes place.
Different ultrasound examinations answer different clinical questions. The examination requested by your treating practitioner helps determine the area to assess and any preparation needed.

What to expect
For many external ultrasound examinations, gel is placed on the skin and a probe is moved over the area being examined. You may be asked to change position or briefly hold your breath. The approach depends on the examination; ask the clinic what is planned for you.
Ultrasound findings are considered alongside your symptoms, examination and other tests. Not every condition can be assessed by ultrasound, and your treating practitioner may recommend other imaging.
Preparation for your scan
Some ultrasound examinations need preparation, such as instructions about eating, drinking or your bladder. Others do not. Confirm the exact instructions for your requested scan; do not fast or change medicines based on general online guidance.
