01
A panoramic view of the teeth and jaws
An OPG, or orthopantomogram, is a panoramic X-ray that shows the upper and lower jaws, teeth and surrounding structures on a single image. Dentists, orthodontists, oral surgeons and other practitioners use it to assess a range of dental and jaw concerns.
During an OPG, the machine rotates around your head while you stand or sit still. The examination is quick and does not involve anything placed inside the mouth for the image itself.
02
Lateral cephalometric imaging
A lateral cephalometric X-ray is a standardised side view of the head that shows the relationship between the teeth, jaws and facial bones. It is commonly used in orthodontic planning and assessment.
Your referring practitioner decides which views are needed. Confirm with the clinic which examination has been requested before attending.
03
Safety and preparation
These examinations use a small amount of ionising radiation. Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant or could be pregnant before the examination.
You may be asked to remove items such as earrings, hairpins, glasses, hearing aids and removable dental appliances, as metal over the area can affect the images. Follow the team’s positioning instructions and remain still while the image is taken.
Preparation for your scan
Bring your referral from your dentist, orthodontist or other practitioner and confirm appointment arrangements with the clinic. Remove jewellery and metal items around the head and neck before the examination; the team will guide you.
General information only. Follow the clinic’s instructions for your individual examination.
